Poker on the Silverscreen

At present, Hollywood stars are entering the world of poker by being poker player themselves. But before that, various artists have already played the role of poker players a long time ago in movies. Some of these movies really capture the life of a poker player, while others are just fun to watch. Some movies on poker are Maverick, The Sting, Cincinnati Kid and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Maverick is one of the most popular movies on poker, if not the most. Maverick stars the very talented and charming Mel Gibson. He plays the role of a poker player/enthusiast whose dream is to enter a high-stakes poker tournament and of course, win the grand prize. It doesn't have much poker action, but the funny setups, double crosses and twists in this movie make up for it. Watch how Mel Gibson gets into a lot of trouble and manages to get out of it all.

The Sting is a movie about high stakes poker. This movie stars Paul Newman and the highly acclaimed actor Robert Redford. They are poker players who are playing against cheating mobs. If you're looking for an Academy Award winning poker movie, then The Sting is what you're looking for. The jazz music in this movie captures the setting very well.

The Cincinnati Kid, considered by many people as the best poker movie ever made, is a story of a kid from Cincinnati who dreams to be the best poker player ever. Some say that if you haven't seen this movie, then you really haven't seen any real poker movie at all. The movie takes us to the adventure of the boy as he journeys to be the best. For him to be the best, he struggles to fight with the best, and must beat him. The last half is full of the poker tournament alone. Unlike in Maverick, you'll enjoy this more if poker action is what you're looking for. Cincinnati Kid is set in 1920's-30's New Orleans.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is directed by the talented Guy Ritchie. Like Maverick, it doesn't have that much poker action. Instead, it shows the other face of poker, which is facing the poker debts. It exposes the dangers of being indebted to the wrong people because of poker. In this movie, the main characters are in big trouble after owing money to a criminal. This movie is fast-paced, and you'll enjoy the different direction style of Guy Ritchie.
